10:45am — BOAT RIDE TO TORCELLO (2h)
11.30 — 1.30pm — Torcello, the earliest center of civilization on the lagoons, is today a remote, evocative and almost deserted island: with its handful of residents living it in apparent isolation, its magnificent yet lonely cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta surrounded by aforas and orchards, and the little octagonal church of Santa Fosca — charming vestiges of its glorious past — lingering on the main square. The near — complete absence of commercial exploitation and tourismensity enhances the magic of the island, and contrasts dramatically with the bustling activity of Venice. Torcello is unique, as it was Venetian and yet so different, as it has been home to Hemingway, as it is inhabited, and yet incredibly quiet, and as it is great to explore by bike or on foot. Here our guide will bring alive the earliest center of civilization on the lagoons, unfolding all the beauty and charm of this island’s millenary history as Byzantine and then Venetian outpost, important trading center but also fierce rival of Venice, artistic and political center. Her glory will come alive in front of the sparkling mosaics of her magnificent basilica, the oldest building in the lagoons, and in the enchanting little Santa Fosca.

4 — 5.45pm — Murano, famous worldwide for its glass, is the perfect place to end our watery journey. Glass has been made here since the 10th century, initially mostly for the needs of a growing Venetian community. From the late 13th century, as the glass blowers were all moved to the island by a decree of the Venetian Government — so as to reduce the risks of fire hazard — Murano became the epicenter of glass production worldwide, and the ever-growing skills of its maestri made it one of the most important centers for the arts and decadent in Venice.
Your visit combines an explanation on the discovery of glass, its infinite applications and the importance it had for Venice, with a demonstration of contemporary glass-making by a glass master. Marvel at the skillful and fast movements of the maestro as he creates a work of art in front of your eyes, while your guide explains the different styles and techniques used to create the many objects on display in the numerous showrooms you’ll visit after the demo.
